Heartwood texture
The wood in the center of the trunk (heartwood, pith) has a different structure from sapwood, so the shrinkage during wood drying differs, and as a result cracks form in the wood. In fresh wood these cracks are smaller or may not be present at all; the drier the wood, the more cracked it becomes. Wood is unstable and, under atmospheric influences, deforms and changes shape and dimensions. It is used in construction for making roof structures.
