A sanded surface is much more smooth than a planed one, the surface is cleaned and ready for painting. On planed surfaces, traces of wood processing (cross cuts) are usually visible, which become even more visible after painting. After sanding, this is no longer the case. Knots that the planer cannot cut cleanly due to their structure are made smooth by sanding. Sanding removes most of the defects that occur during planing.
