On days when we are “scorched” by exceptional heat, it is important to have shade where you can retreat from the blazing sun and enough fluids to hydrate your body.
Those of you who do not tolerate the heat well retreat into the house. Those of you who enjoy hot days and are merely looking for protection from the sun have only one option left: to create a shady corner in the garden where you will be safe from dangerous rays and at the same time not be shut indoors all day.

For good shade, you have several different options. You can set up a large parasol. Which is quite good, as long as you do not live in a windier area of Slovenia. If that is the case, you will have quite a few problems, as the wind will constantly knock it over and you will not get much shade from it. In addition, large parasols are impractical because they are heavy. They are not easy to move and adjust. An older person in particular may already have trouble just opening the parasol.

Another option is to move along with the sun. Wherever the sun creates shade, that is where you go as well. Of course, this is far from an ideal option, but many people do exactly that. They move their chair meter by meter together with the sun. If you are just sitting outside and cooling off with a drink, this is still quite acceptable. You take your drink and chair and move. Problem solved. But if you would like to enjoy culinary delights from the grill or from the outdoor kitchen outside, then you have a problem, because you will soon have to go from one end of the garden to the other for the side dish.

The third solution is pergola. It is ideal for all those who like the heat and do not want to spend the whole day in the house. It is also ideal for those who like to sit outside in the evenings and do not want the sun shining in their eyes (which is truly annoying). In addition, it offers many possibilities and ways of letting light through. This allows each user to create their own shady corner. Exactly the way they want it.

Both options are good. It mainly depends on your preferences and what you want to gain from it. For those of you who want to create a beautiful and unique corner in the garden, a pergola without a roof is more suitable. Plant a vine next to it, which then climbs up and in the summer, in addition to shade, also offers delicious grapes. A pergola with a roof, however, provides more protection from weather conditions. Under it, you can still have an afternoon lunch or socialize with friends even on rainy days, as the roof protects you.

Those of you who choose a pergola with a roof are faced with a choice between transparent and opaque materials. Transparent materials such as glass or Lexan sheets, allow a lot of light through. Lexan single-layer polycarbonate sheets in particular provide exceptionally good protection against UV rays. In addition, they are impact-resistant, fire-resistant, and practically immune to temperature changes, as they retain their properties even at extreme temperatures.

For opaque roofs, we recommend using bitumen tape. This is welded onto the boarding battens. The roofing is especially useful for flat roofs, as it is waterproof, and due to its rubber base, the tape is quieter, as raindrops are hardly heard at all.

Just keep one thing in mind here. Make sure your pergola does not cast shade on any important room in the house. Ensure that spaces such as the living room or your home office are full of light and not covered by the pergola’s shadow. It should also be positioned in a way that provides a certain degree of privacy so that no one disturbs you during lunch with friends.

Therefore, all materials must be the best, as only in this way do they provide long-lasting durability and quality. The deck is no different. It should be built from genuine Siberian larch.
