What can we do for the garden during winter?

The warm days are already far behind us. We have all already put away garden tools, the lawn mower, and the harvest. However, this certainly does not mean that your garden must lie dormant in winter. Many vegetables can thrive even at very low temperatures. For example, Brussels sprouts, kale, and some types of lettuce, with appropriate protection, also grow well during cold winter days. However, today we will not talk so much about vegetables as about what we can do for the garden during the winter days.

If you have not yet checked the wooden parts of your garden, now is truly the last chance to do so. If the protective wood stain has faded or started to peel, it is high time to begin renovation. When applying protection, pay attention to which coatings you use and above all make sure that your tools are suitable and clean.

Of course, this applies to the fixed parts of your garden, such as fences, the garden shed, etc. Wooden garden furniture is even much more susceptible to cold and moisture, so it is best to place it at least under a roof or simply store it in the garden shed or garage. This will preserve the quality of the wood and in spring you will be able to enjoy sunny days again. We do not recommend wrapping it in a tarp, because moisture also gets trapped underneath, which in the long term can affect its lifespan.

Animals also need care in winter. This does not mean that your house has to become a zoo, but you can place a birdhouse with food in the garden, which will help many birds find food more easily and survive the winter. Just make sure that the birdhouse stands at least 1.75 m high. Only then do the birds feel safe and have a view of all sides of the garden.

The water in the pipes is POISON for your garden. Because of the cold, it freezes and expands. This means that it puts pressure on the plumbing installation and rubber hoses. All of this can lead to the destruction of the entire plumbing installation, which means that in spring you will have to replace everything. The solution to this is simple. Before winter, shut off the outdoor water. It is also essential that you drain the entire plumbing installation. This way, you will preserve your water system and diligently water your vegetables in the spring.

There is also a lot of talk about how nothing can be installed in the garden in winter. Due to the cold and snow, it is impossible to install garden sheds or anything else. That is a myth!

Even during winter days a lot can still be done in the garden. In particular, our method of building and delivering a garden house is more than suitable for delivery even during winter days. A good example is our CUBIE garden houses. Namely, because we deliver the house already finished, it really takes very little time. All that needs to be prepared beforehand is the base on which we place the house, and that is all. There are practically no other limitations. The house is delivered even in light rain and snow. If the weather is truly bad, then of course this plan is canceled, but the weather conditions really have to be extreme, for us not to be able to deliver the garden house.

So we can see that there is plenty of work to do in the garden even in winter. It needs to be well cared for so that in spring it will be ready for your new gardening endeavors.
