Why is it not good to use poor-quality wood for a garden shed?

When we mention garden shed, each person has a different use in mind. Someone stores firewood in it, someone else keeps all their produce in it, and a third person stores all kinds of tools in it. In any case, it is an almost indispensable space that should not be missing from any garden.

However, many sheds begin to deteriorate, after years, because they were built from poor-quality wood. Poor-quality wood requires constant maintenance to preserve its vitality and extend its lifespan. Take spruce as an example. Ordinary unprotected spruce has an expected lifespan of 5 years. This means you will have to replace the shed every 5 years, or you will have to spend a lot of money on it just to keep it usable.

Although painted spruce has its lifespan doubled, it still needs to be repainted every 2–4 years for optimal protection. In the long run, you spend the same amount of money as if you had chosen to build with higher-quality wood. In doing so, you also lose something no one can give back to you. Time spent maintaining and restoring a garden shed is lost forever. A garden shed has its purpose and that is all; it should not take away time that you would spend with your family and friends. And if you think carefully, how many times have you had to postpone a trip or picnic because you had work to do at home? Painting and properly protecting such a structure requires a huge amount of work, and it is a project that takes several days. Is that really time you can afford to lose?

We only live once and are given only so many years on Earth, so we must use them for things you love doing and not for things that are unproductive and drain your energy. And using high-quality wood to build a garden shed will definitely save you valuable time and energy.

An even better choice is Siberian larch. Due to its growth in the forests of Siberia, where there is little space between the trunks, this is an exceptionally dense wood. In addition, Siberian larch (most of the wood) is classified as so-called resonance wood. This is wood that expands evenly when humidity increases and contracts evenly when exposed to increased sunlight. This reduces the possibility of cracks forming, and the warping of boards is significantly less. Let me also mention that the above statements apply only if the origin of the wood is actually Siberia – the wood must therefore not be of plantation origin.

But since we all want our garden shed to be beautiful and elegant, Siberian larch has another excellent characteristic. Namely, unlike other types of wood that are full of knots, this one (in 1st quality) has significantly fewer of them. This is again a consequence of growth in Siberian forests. Due to the already mentioned small spacing between the trunks, the only source of sunlight is from above. And the branches, for better and easier absorption, grow significantly higher, leaving a large part of the trunk bare and practically free of knots and resin. This makes your garden shed beautiful and flawless.

So we can see that it truly is not worth building a garden shed from poor-quality wood. In addition to money, you will also lose time and probably quite a few nerves. And instead of it being a beautiful and practical addition to your garden, it becomes a nightmare. That is why it is truly worth paying 10% more for the material, because this will ensure long-term durability and, above all, save you time that you can spend on more important things in life.
