Why is Siberian larch the best choice for your garden products?

In our previous blogs and vlogs, we have often emphasized the importance and durability of Siberian larch. We still claim that it is one of the best materials for garden furniture, as it withstands and defies all weather conditions and serves you for many years.

But to help you understand everything better and learn why we can be confident in its quality, read the lines below, where we have described this tree species in a bit more detail.

Recently, our carpentry workshop transitioned to the third generation, which means we have more than 55 years of working with wood behind us. Over all these years, many different types of wood have passed through our hands, and an enormous amount of knowledge has been accumulated, which has only been further developed from generation to generation.

In addition, five decades means that we have followed many wooden products throughout their entire lifespan. We have learned how spruce behaves in the rain, how durable different coatings are, and how important it is to truly use quality wood for garden products.

All these experiences also show that first-quality native Siberian larch is the optimal combination of quality and price. Although Siberian larch is an exceptionally high-quality wood, there are exotic woods that are better, but of course they come at their price. Larch, however, is still affordable for its quality.

In the previous paragraph, we mentioned native Siberian larch. This means that it grew in Siberia and not on some plantation. We must pay special attention to this, as there is a lot of so-called plantation Siberian larch on the market, which is only an approximation of the native one.

As we already mentioned, true native Siberian larch grew in cold Siberia. A special characteristic of Siberia is the density of its forests. Consequently, this means that an individual tree receives little sunlight. The trees therefore grow slowly and upward. Because they grow slowly, the growth rings are extremely close together. In practice, this means that native Siberian larch has as many as 10 growth rings per 1 cm of a sawn board. Meanwhile, plantation-grown larch has only 3-5.

We directly associate the density of growth rings with the durability of wood. The denser the wood, the better its durability. Such wood is classified among the so-called resonant woods, which have one exceptional property. With increased moisture, the wood expands evenly, and with increased light, it contracts evenly. This reduces the possibility of cracks and warping of the wood, and your product remains "safe" for much longer.

The last good characteristic of Siberian larch is its appearance. Once again, this factor is influenced by Siberia. Because in Siberian forests the only source of sunlight is above, the branches also grow higher in order to absorb it more easily. A large part of the trunk thus remains bare, and such material contains almost no knots or resin, which likewise spoil the appearance and functionality of the final product.
