When is wood NOT suitable for use in joinery?
At first glance, it is possible to determine whether suitable or unsuitable wood was used for your product.
Wood that contains the pith is unsuitable for final products in joinery. It is used in construction and carpentry. It is suitable for making roof and other structures where the movement of the wood does not cause problems.
Radial saw
With the right selection and proper cutting of wood, the lifespan of your products can be considerably longer, the wood warps much less and shrinks less. Radial texture depends on the method of sawing and on the way the material is selected. Wood is said to be radially cut when the growth rings are as perpendicular as possible to the width of the board. Such a cut greatly improves the durability of the wood and largely reduces the possibility of wood deformation due to atmospheric influences. All of our garden furniture and most of our spruce fence and other elements are cut in the radial direction.
Center wood
The wood in the middle of the trunk (heartwood, pith) has a different structure from the sapwood, so the shrinkage during wood drying is different, and the consequence of this is the formation of cracks in the wood. In fresh wood these cracks are smaller, or there are none at all; the drier the wood, the more cracked it is. Wood is unstable and deforms under atmospheric influences, changing shape and dimensions. It is used in construction for making roof structures.
Tangential wood
We recognize it by its U- and V-shaped texture. It is dimensionally less stable than radial wood, but with proper drying and correct installation, it is possible to achieve great stability and usability in products with this wood.
